The Eco-innovation Workshop
EnvKTN

Date: 15 April 2010
Location: UCA Farnham, Surrey

There are growing market opportunities for companies that are developing and/or have developed innovative environmental products and technologies.  Specific emerging opportunities include the development of ‘zero’ carbon and ‘net zero carbon’ buildings in line with the Code for Sustainable Buildings, ‘windows’ for low carbon technologies related to advent of UK feed-in tariffs, smart metering and the greening of government procurement.

However there are many challenges in moving good ideas through prototyping, research & development to demonstration and commercialisation. This leaves many start-ups, inventors and existing companies left scratching their heads for answers.

  • Where is information on funding available?
  • Where can good market intelligence be found?
  • How can my product or technology be protected?
  • What are the manufacturing implications of developing my product or technology?
  • What marketing aspects should be considered?

The Eco-innovation Workshop will attempt to tackle the above and other questions through a series of practical presentations and discussions.

Horizons in Hospital-Acquired Infections
SIKTN

Date: 21 April 2010
Location: Edinburgh

nexxusNexxus and the UK Sensors and Instrumentation Knowledge Transfer Network (SIKTN) have organised an event to examine opportunities arising from the hospital-acquired infections challenge.

The legacy of previous infection-control practice and inappropriate antibiotic use has led to the demand to control hospital-acquired infections. Although improving, the situation still presents a pressing need for even better solutions in the clinic. This demand creates opportunities to innovate new solutions. Growth in international commitment will identify and develop new anti-infective medicines in coming years, but we must also meet the immediate need for effective diagnostics and infection control.

This joint meeting explores opportunities arising from hospital-acquired infections, especially for diagnostics and infection control as ways to manage infection risk. Attendees will hear from the clinical front-line, and from researchers and businesses developing new technologies to help. As with all Nexxus events, you will have ample opportunity to network and find ways to apply your knowledge to address the challenge.

Co-digestion - Is it worth the biogas?
aqua

Date: 20 May 2010
Location: The Teacher Building, Glasgow

For many practitioners in the UK co-digestion is considered to be the digestion of sewage sludge in admixture with another waste type such as food waste or source-separated household waste. However a vast range of organic materials can be co-digested, including animal manures, silage, paper wastes and other industrial organic wastes.
It is the aim of this event to:

  • Understand better the factors that will inform the debate and identify the major knowledge gaps.
  • Look at the regulatory barriers currently in place, the measures being taken to dismantle them and what the final regulatory framework may look like.
  • Consider what the biogas potential for co-digestion is in terms of the organic wastes available, how secure these sources are and how the economics associated with their use may change in the future.
  • Look at the outstanding technical issues with regards to pre and post-treatment technologies, ensuring the quality of the feedstocks and examining the robustness of digester design and operation for variable feedstock intakes over the asset life.

Aqua Enviro is currently inviting presentations from those with experience in this area with a particular emphasis on: economic aspects of co-digestion; the regulatory barriers and how a future regulatory framework should look, and the outstanding technical issues associated with this process.
