| Faraday Discussion 149: Analysis for Healthcare Diagnostics and Theranostics |
The need in healthcare to detect biomolecular species such as proteins, oligonucleotides (DNA and RNA) and cells for diagnostics is driving the current development of physical techniques. The development is generally based on optical, electrochemical and mass spectrometric transduction to enable these measurements. These are now also being exploited in array formats, enabling the development of high throughput detection to inform systems biology and pathway medicine by giving new insights into biomolecular pathways and the identification of new target analytes. This is a highly topical and exciting area which opens up the real prospect of theranostics (the use of diagnostics in informing patient specific therapy), but for which development and optimisation of detection requires an understanding and control of the fundamental physical processes occurring both in sensing and in signal transduction and the comparatives merits of alternative detection strategies. For high throughput detection, bioinformatics (the processing and interpretation of vast amounts of data) also presents a real challenge. For more information and registration, please click here |

| 4th European Water & Wastewater Management Conference |
The principles underlying the design and operation of water and wastewater treatment infrastructure have undergone large changes over the past five years. The Water Industry is now faced with seemingly contradictory requirements to deliver large reductions in its carbon footprint (enforced by the Carbon Reduction Commitment), whilst gearing up to meet the much tighter standards of the Water Framework Directive and delivering both of these at a reduced cost to the consumer. A common political response to this dilemma is to state glibly that the industry will require more innovation. Innovation has a role to play, but its potential to deliver solutions of the magnitude required by the industry should not be overestimated. This is particularly the case in view of the scale of the carbon and energy reductions that are required and the quite short timescales over which these reductions must be delivered. But such challenges pose opportunities and many in the industry relish the prospects of moving out of recession by delivering a new generation of low-energy options, constructed and operated with a much reduced carbon footprint. There was a similar optimism two decades ago, following the privatisation of the water industry: a period which oversaw a plethora of innovative treatment alternatives, although few of these now survive. It is the purpose of this Conference to explore how the industry is gearing up to the immediate challenges by both increasing the efficiency of existing technology whilst pushing forward with the development of more novel approaches. It is intended to provide an interactive environment where those who are offering the new ideas and solutions, can interact with and learn from those who have been involved with the successes and failures of the previous century For more information, please click here |

| BBSRC/ AHRC Workshop on "The Challenges of Visualising Biological Data" |
![]() |
Recent advances in analytical technologies and methods in the biosciences have led to a 'data deluge', both in terms of the volume and the complexity of data generated by biological experiments. New ways of interpreting, manipulating and presenting bioscience data are urgently needed to allow researchers to fully exploit the data arising from their experiments. The experiences from other data-rich disciplines in visualising such data give a valuable insight into what can be achieved with modern visualisation technologies and methods. The insights and expertise from computational and information sciences and the creative arts and design are essential for this. BBSRC and AHRC recognises this as an area where some facilitated networking between different disciplines would be beneficial, and is holding a workshop to bring experts together to explore some of the challenges and possible solutions to the visualisation of biological data, bringing to bear the expertise of the creative and information research disciplines.
