| Sensor Technology Transfer |
Date: 17 June 2010
Location: University of the West of England, Bristol, UK
This event is jointly hosted by SWIG and IBST. Technology Transfer is the process of developing an idea into a commercial reality to be used by an end-user to meet a need. The technology transfer pathway is a continuum of development from idea, proof-of-principal, protection of ideas, developing the product, testing the product, manufacturing the product, marketing and selling to the end user. Higher Education Institutions and SMEs are involved in the early stages of the technology transfer pathway with the end-user adopting technology. The idea being generated may be novel and will follow the whole pathway; or the idea may involve technology that has been developed for other sectors which can be adapted for use in the water industry. Many sensor technologies fall into the later group.
Fundamental to the technology transfer pathway is communication between the end users, such as the water companies, SMEs and universities. This workshop is designed to help all involved in the technology transfer pathway to understand each other’s requirements to maximise the chances of the right technologies being developed to meet real-world needs in the most economic and efficient manner.

Application of Biosensors in the Water Industry
Date: 18 September 2008
Location: University of the West of England, Bristol, UK
Jointly hosted by SWIG, IBST and SIKTN.
Biosensors are devices that combine the specificity of a biological interaction with a sensor technology to give a rapid measurement of an analyte. For example the glucose biosensor is widely used by diabetics to measure their blood glucose and utilises the interaction of glucose with an enzyme such as glucose oxidase. The translation of biosensor technology into the water industry has been slow but with the development of new technology a number of applications are starting to be commercialised. This workshop will review some of the advances in technology that facilitate the use of biosensors in the water industry. Talks will include the use of nano-materials, neural networks and protein stabilisation technology. In addition, there will be examples of how particular measurements are made using biosensor technology, including pesticides, ammonia, endotoxins and micro-organisms.More |
