Biosensors and Biosecurity

Dr Jason Betley, Bio Product Development Manager, Smiths Detection

Threats to biosecurity, both real and perceived, are of continuing concern in military and civil circles.  These threats can be mitigated against by the use of instrumentation and assays in screening and event-driven modes.  Types of biosensors used in the biosecurity environment will be reviewed, including recent and current product developments within Smiths Detection.

Biography: Dr Jason Betley

Jason Betley graduated from Southampton University in 1992 in Chemistry and Biochemistry, before completing his PhD in Bioorganic Chemistry at the University of Sheffield with Professor Mike Blackburn.  After two years of post-doctoral study at the University of Colorado with Professor Marv Caruthers, he returned to industry in the UK.  After 8 years in Chemistry/Biochemistry research in UK biotechnology, in 2006 he joined Smiths Detection, where he leads the R&D activities in the UK for Biological Detection.
