Welcome to the Institute of Bio-Sensing Technology
Bio-sensing technologies are of increasing importance in healthcare, agri-food, environmental and security sectors, and this is reflected in the continued growth of global markets for such technologies.
The Institute of Bio-Sensing Technology (IBST), the first of its type in the UK, aims to develop academic/industrial partnerships to address the technological challenges posed by each of these sectors - from the development of novel technology for detection and measurement of biological systems to the integration of biological systems into novel sensing technology.

The workshop will deliver a programme of lectures from leading practitioners and image processing specialists. It will present the technologies underpinning current day medical imaging and the challenges that exist, alongside a range of potential signal processing solutions. Many of these will be taken from alternative application areas. It aims to attract a broad audience including clinicians and academics, and to stimulate discussion around some of these key challenges. Further Details about the event will follow. |

As result of meetings with the Rector, Vice-Rectors, and Heads of Departments at Zhetysu State University, follow-on discussions with the University of the West of England develop joint BSc and MSc courses in the areas of biological and environmental sciences. Furthermore it has been agreed to develop research collaboration between the two Universities. A first step in this collaboration is the development of an EU International Incoming Fellowship application which will be submitted in August 2010. The particular area of research interest at Zhetysu State University is the development of novel technologies for the effective detection of environmental pollutants and for conservation purposes. Development of this joint research programme will be facilitated by the Institute of Bio-Sensing Technology. Additionally, Academic Registry at UWE has drawn up a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enable discussions in these areas to proceed at a more formal level. The next stage in this collaboration will occur when a delegation from Zhetysu State University visits UWE in September. For more information please contact Prof. Olena Doran. 16/08/2010. |

Alex Green (International Development Office), Dr Peter Spencer-Phillips (Head of Department of Applied Sciences) and Prof Olena Doran (Director of Research Development, Institute of Bio-Sensing Technology) visited Zhetysu State University, Taldykorgan, Kazakhstan in May 2010. The visit was funded by British Council and the main aim was to explore potential collaboration between the University of West of England and Zhetysu State University in both, research and education.
