North Bristol NHS Trust

NBT LogoNBT is the largest acute NHS Trust in the South West of England, employing over 8500 staff and providing care to the local population of approximately 500,000 in North Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset. Specialist regional services include neurosciences, plastic surgery, orthopaedics, pathology and renal services, and our international reputation means that we also receive referrals from all over the UK and overseas.

The Trust has the second largest research portfolio in the region and over 500 researchers lead or collaborate in over 400 individual research studies each year, including 50 commercial trials. NBT research is characterized by a range of excellent basic science combined with integrated applied science, and aims to maintain a balance of basic, experimental and applied research. In addition to participating in many Cancer Trials, NBT leads six main research themes:

  • Chronic urological disease and treatment technologies
  • Chronic neurological conditions, particularly Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, paediatric neurology, Speech & Language disorders and dementias
  • Musculoskeletal research - Orthopaedics and Rheumatology -particularly total joint replacement
  • Antimicrobial research, particularly antibiotic resistance
  • Renal medicine, particularly pancreatic islet transplantation
  • Medical cell biology, particularly Renal, Diabetes, Respiratory Medicine

The local Universities are significant partners in research with the Trust, particularly the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. The Trust also collaborates with a broad range of other Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and NHS partners and has substantial international networks.
