Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC)

PML LogoHackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) is a 775-bed teaching and research hospital and provides the largest number of admissions in New Jersey.

The medical center was recently ranked in four specialties including geriatrics, heart and heart surgery, kidney disorders, and orthopedics in U.S. News and World Report’s 2009-10 publication of America’s Best Hospitals. HUMC is the only New Jersey acute-care hospital to receive any rankings. For three years in a row, HealthGrades® named HUMC one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals. These hospitals have achieved better survival rates and lower complication rates across dozens of medical procedures and diagnoses, from cardiac care to orthopedic surgery, consistently ranking among the top five percent in the nation for overall clinical outcomes. HUMC is the only healthcare facility in New Jersey, New York, and New England to be named one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Only one percent of the nation’s hospitals can make this claim.

Scientific discovery through research is a major component of Hackensack University Medical Center's mission. Research at the medical center is conducted in nearly every field, with an emphasis on pediatric and adult cancers, childhood diseases, cardiology, allergy and immunology, orthopedics, urology, pulmonary medicine, neurology, and infectious diseases. Ongoing research studies are supported by some of the nation's top funding sources - including the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the American Cancer Society. Support for basic and clinical research also comes from private foundations and corporations, such as pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

Investigators at Hackensack University Medical Center collaborate with their counterparts at other healthcare institutions and research facilities, including the U.S. Department of Energy, City University of New York (CUNY), Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and Rockefeller University. Outstanding research collaborations also arise from the medical center's role as a major teaching affiliate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) - New Jersey Medical School. The medical center is designated by the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, as a Community Clinical Oncology Program site, one of only 50 in the nation and the only such program in New Jersey. Clinical trials, protocol studies, and cancer control group research are conducted through The Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, The Southwest Oncology Group, The Children's Oncology Group, The University of Rochester Cancer Center, and The National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project.
