Prof Olena Doran

Director - Centre for Research in Biomedicine, UWE

Olena Doran Olena obtained her MSc (Distinction) and PhD in biochemistry at Kharkov State University, Ukraine. Her PhD was related to age aspects of mitochondrial structure and function. As a recipient of the European Fund Fellowship, she worked for 2 years at the Nenski Institute of Experimental Biology in Poland, where she continued her research on mitochondrial enzymes.

In 1998 Olena was awarded the Royal Society/NATO Fellowship to study the mechanism of cytochrome c release during apoptosis at the University of Bristol. She worked at the University of Bristol for 10 years (last 5 years as a Head of Research Group). Her main research interests are genetics and molecular biology with particular emphasis on genetic control and molecular mechanisms of diseases and pathological states; food quality and food safety, lipid metabolism. Her research has been supported by BBSRC, DEFRA, EU, British and International Industry and other funding bodies.

She has established and developed collaborations with a large number of Universities, Research Institutes and industrial companies in the UK, Europe and world-wide.

Olena is Professor in Biomedical Research and the Director of theCentre for Research in Biomedicine (CRIB) at the University of the West of England.
